The beautiful mountain town of Leoben is home to rich historico-cultural treasures.
Among the most important is Göss Abbey. The former Benedictine convent looks back on more than 1,000 years of history and is Styria’s oldest abbey. The “Schwammerturm” tower is the town’s landmark, formerly part of the fortifications, today the only town gate that has been preserved.
In the “MuseumsCenter” you can travel back in time and learn lots of interesting facts about the importance of steel and iron in Leoben’s history. Archduke Johann, also called the “Styrian Prince”, decisively influenced and contributed to the development of the town and the whole region around the Erzberg Mountain.
Tip: Leoben is the ideal starting point for extended experience-packed tours through Styria. The Erzberg Mountain and myth-enshrouded Leopoldsteinersee Lake are only a few kilometres away.
