A certain gottlieb Biedermeier – in his capacity of invented literary figure – lent his name to an entire epoch and is considered the epitome of this era, its people and lifestyle.

Baden bei wien is Biedermeier through and through and a nostalgic place. Zest for life, entertainment and fun are the dominating forces; the town hosts the biggest casino of central europe, a modern roman spa and an operetta theatre renowned far beyond Austria’s borders.

First mentioned in the year 869 under the name »Padun«, Baden was given town status by Emperor Friedrich III in 1480. Viticulture and spa baths are the most important pillars of the town’s economy.

Turkish invasions and major fires destroyed the centre of town that was to be rebuilt completely in the Biedermeier period. Architecture, art and horticulture blossomed during this era. Architects, such as Carl von Moreau, Josef Kornhäusel and Otto Wagner left their marks on the town with their noble mansions, palaces or beautiful squares.

Between 1803 and 1834, the imperial court spent the summers in the Baden summer residence. At the time of the Vienna Congress the spa town played a prominent role in Europe, and between the wars it was the most important spa resort in Austria.

Grand Casino Baden, once a famous, noble place where spa guests dined, it is now a modern event centre and casino. Römertherme Baden spa promises Caribbean atmosphere in the 900 m2 of water under Europe’s biggest glass roof.

The Thermalstrandbad beach offers the ambience of an imperial lido with a vast sandy beach. The harness racing trackhosts international trotting races in historic surroundings. In the Rosarium in Doblhoff park 20,000 roses bloom twice a year – a scented dream!
