Braunau – Steyr – Gmunden – Bad Ischl

Tour information: 241 km / approx. 3.5 hours driving time

This route starts in Braunau on the bank of the Inn River, a historic stop along the salt trade route. Here folklorist tradition and true hospitality meet set in a unique architectural backdrop yet still in the heart of the “Unterer Inn” European nature preserve. Past vast grain fields and over beautiful hills, the route continues on to the 1,000-year old town of Steyr, a jewel of medieval urban architecture at the gates of the Kalkalpen National Park and a fountain of inspiration to renowned artists such as Franz Schubert, Anton Bruckner and Dora Dunkel. Turning southwards the route then leads via Kremsmünster and Scharnstein to the Traunsee Lake – with the Traunstein Mountain heralding the next stop, the town of Gmunden. A walk along the lake promenade brings you to the Orth Castle, which gave the popular TV series its name. After a short break in the Hauptplatz Square with the ceramic Glockenspiel in view – the route continues on along the deep blue lake to the last leg of this trip, the Imperial town of Bad Ischl. Here the Emperor Franz Joseph got engaged to Sisi and he spent many summers in this delightful town in the heart of the Salzkammergut Lake Region.
