Hallein

The historical city

The town itself was first mentioned in a document in 1198, salt mining on the Dürrnberg Mountain already in 1191. The town charter was awarded between 1218 and 1232. Hallein has become known above all for its salt production and the archaeological finds dating back to the Celtic period.

The old saline buildings and salt mine recall the times in which salt was not only essential for life but meant above all money and power. The rich archaeological finds from the grave fields on the Dürrnberg Mountain are fascinating proof of the creative and artistic skills of its Iron Age people.
