Gmunden

Admittedly, it isn’t a large town, but it isn’t a small sleepy village in the mountains either. The ceramics town of Gmunden is much more. A town with culture and flair, romantic and full of life at the same time. A place of charm and contrasts, a spot for wild times and quiet moments. Simply fantastic. – That’s the ceramics town of Gmunden. The lively shopping town with a southern character invites you to wander round, shop or enjoy the culinary offerings of the local gastronomy. Its unique position on the shores of Lake Traun, surrounded by countless mountains, calls to you to come and simply unwind.

TOWNHISTORY

Gmunden was an important settlement as early as Celtic times and grew in the 11th century to become a significant centre of the salt trade. Due to its favourable climate and the beauty of the Salzkammergut landscape, the aristocracy and wealthy citizens took their summer holidays at the town on Lake Traun as early as the 19th century. Emperor Franz Josef for example, visited regularly, prior to his summer holidays in Bad Ischl the Royal House of Hanover, where the nobility from all over Europe stayed. A chapter of world history was written in Gmunden. Important treaties that changed the shape of Europe were concluded in the Kammerhof (then the only seat of the Hapsburgs in the Salzkammergut). Emperor Maximilian, the »last knight«, signed a wedding agreement with Bianca Maria Sforza of Milan. This marriage was the incentive for Milan being incorporated into Austria. In 1514 Maximilian concluded a friendship and peace treaty with the tsar Wassilij Ivanovitch II, which meant that after the Battle of Mohac, in 1526, Hungary came to Austria through the Gmunden alliance.
