
Among snow-covered mountains and the crystal-clear Zell Lake, the medieval town nestles against the rising slopes of the Schmittenhöhe. A leisurely and active feeling for life is complemented to make an attractive mixture for local people and guests. Ancient inns, restaurants, bars and pubs work their magic with their ambiance and culinary pleasures. A variety of cultural and sport offers in all seasons.
TOWNHISTORY
First inhabited in Roman times, in 740 AD a settlement called “Cella in Bisoncio” was founded by monks of Archbishop Johannes. The town is one of the oldest Bavarian settlements in the Pinzgau. In 1358 Zell acquired the status of a market town. With the construction of the railway in 1875, the first tourists also arrived. In 1928 Zell became a town.
SURROUNDINGS
The Zell am See – Kaprun area could have been created for all kinds of sport and leisure activities: ski sports in winter, water sports, golf, riding, cycling, mountain biking, hiking in summer. On foot or with the cable car up to the Schmittenhöhe; where the visitor will discover the unique sight of 30 three thousand metre peaks. The glacier ski resort of Kitzsteinhorn (3,203 m) is an attraction for winter sports fans all year round. The high mountain reservoirs Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden, Kaprun Castle, Vötters vehicle museum, the Sigmund-Thun gorge and many more destinations are well worth visiting.
CITY & GOLF
The Zell am See - Kaprun Golf Club, with two modern 18-hole courses, is the largest golf course in the Austrian Alps. Both the Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn courses offer a real challenge to every golfer.
