TOWNHISTORY
Enns is a historic site. The area around Enns has been inhabited for 4000 years. In around 200, the Romans set up a legion camp and a town settlement, both of which were named Lauriacum. Under the Babenbergers, Enns grew in significance and in 1212 received its town charter from Duke Leopold VI. This document – still in its original form – is the oldest town charter in Austria. With its unique town tower, which is the emblem of Enns, the Renaissance and Baroque house fronts and the still partly preserved town fortifications, Enns offers a medieval feel in a modern town.

Recreation can be experienced close to nature around Enns. The city offers a widely diverse hiking and cycle path network. The City Adventure Trail, as a permanent international hiking trail (10km), has been conceived for hikers in the city. 25 points illustrate the city history. Enns, the centre of bicycle tourism: The Enns-Mauthausen- Mostviertel ferry forms the connection to the major cycle trails of the region.
