Where Past, Present and Future Blend Harmoniously

The upper Austrian town of wels – called »ovilava« by the romans – with its 60,000 inhabitants is the biggest community in the group of small historic towns. for more than 2000 years, wels has known how to enjoy life.

And life pulsates here between splendid town houses and modern purpose-built structures, romantic courtyards with arcades, trendy pubs and traditional restaurants. Wels is a town of trade exhibitions, a shopping centre and is appreciated beyond regional borders.

Lively pedestrian zones, street artists, al fresco gardens, and particularly cosy pubs and inns shape the town’s profile of a liveable and loveable town.

»Castrum uueles« is mentioned for the first time in official records in 776. Wels was raised to market town in 1215 by Babenberg Leopold VI and to the town status in 1222. On 12 January 1519, Emperor Maximilian I. died at Wels Castle.

At the end of the 16th century, and the beginning of the Counter Reformation, wealthy citizens left the town; the Peasant Wars and the Thirty Years’ War caused the economic decline of Wels.

The inner part of the town was converted to Baroque style in the 18th century. The building of the horse-drawn railway and numerous industrial endeavours took place in the first half of the 19th century, and in 1964 the town was awarded the statute.

Town Hall with Baroque façade and beautiful window baskets. Ledererturm, the last of the four towers of the medieval town walls. Monastery of the Minorites – dating back to the 13th century it displays important frescoes in the choir and cloister and also houses the archaeological museum of the town. House of Salome Alt – a Renaissance building with colourful paintings and tromp l’oeil architecture.

Haas-Hof, – one of the most beautiful arcade Hof courtyards of Wels, built in the 16th century. Wels Fortress where Emperor Maximilian I. died in 1519. The fortress is a cultural and event centre.

The Water Tower was built in 1577 as a water reservoir for public fountains and bourgeois town houses. Stadtplatz square, a unique setting of an architectural entity, is one of the most beautiful squares in Austria. Most of the houses have attractive Baroque facades from the 17th and 18th centuries.
