1000 Years of Romanticism

Were the rivers enns and steyr meet in the middle of the Austrian romantic road between salzburg and vienna lies steyr, a veritable gem of old urban building art.

Countless historic buildings, one of the most beautiful squares in europe with the town’s landmark in the middle – the gothic »Bummerlhaus« – make visitors flock into the town. Culinary treats from the varied upper Austrian cuisine seduce guests to linger, modern shops and small farmers’ markets invite them to strolls.

Today, steyr is a harmonious symbiosis of a past rich in tradition and pulsating modern life style.

Around 980 the Ottakar margraves in Styria built today’s Lamberg Castle. The settlement around the castle and the parish church are first mentioned in official documents in 985. In 1186, the town fell into the ownership of the Babenbergers.

In 1287, Steyr was granted its town charter and extensive trading rights by Duke Albrecht I. An economic crisis brought about by fires in the town and other changes was resolved in 1864 by Josef Werndl’s mass production of breech-loading rifles, which made Steyr the »armourer of Europe«.

The tradition of iron processing continues today in automotive development and production.

General

Town Hall – one of the most important Rococo buildings in Austria. Bummerlhaus – the landmark of the town – best preserved Gothic secular building in the country. Lamberg Castel was first mentioned in 980 under the name of »Styrapurch«, burnt down in 1727 and was rebuilt by the Lamberg Dukes in Baroque style. The Town’s Museum exhibits impressive collections of art and art history.

The Arbeitswelt Museum is a unique industrial museum and event centre located in the picturesque moat. Dunklhof dates back to the 15th century; its inner courtyard with arcades was built in the 16th century. In 1950, the famous Christmas Post Office opened in the pilgrimage village of Christkindl with its Baroque church and nativity scene exwith ex hibition.

The 1st Austrian Christmas Museum st exhibits 18,200 pieces of Christmas decoration from the time 1800–1945.
