Town of the Guilds

Salt, wood, ores, wine, silk, glass, corn, draperies and livestock – the guilds of the town at the river inn have always left their mark on the town. Old portals, Baroque gables, quiet corners and narrow lanes, the mighty, wide river inn, meadows, fields and the wooded hills of the sauwald forest.

Schärding casts a spell over its guests. Famous painters and writers were unable to resist the town’s unique atmosphere and so are newcomers to the town.

The Baroque town is lively and demands to be explored with the many pleasures this involves – at the weekly market, the farmers’ market, the flea market, or in street-side cafés, century-old brewery inns, while enjoying a cup of coffee with »guglhupf« cake, or a beer with »leberkäse« and a »Kaisersemmel« bread roll, or on shopping strolls.

»Scardigna« was first mentioned in documents in 804; in the course of the 9th and 10th centuries, Schärding became the centre of the county of Vornbach-Neuburg. The Counts of Andech followed in 1160 and the Bavarian Wittelsbachs in 1248.

In addition to its economic importance as a trading town on the river Inn, there was soon a great deal of early political activity as well. The Bavarian dukes, above all Ludwig the Bearded (in the 15th century), built Schärding into a strong fortification.

The town suffered severe damage through devastating fires (in 1724 and 1779), and French occupation (1809). After the Napoleonic Wars in 1816, the Innviertel region was again Austrian.

Houses with Baroque facades in the town’s guild colours of the Late Middle Ages. Bakers’ houses, for example, were blue, butchers’ red, the facades of inns were yellow and green. The Linzer Tor, a double gate with fortified Tor passage-way, integrates the former Upper Tower of the town where the tower keeper lived. The Wassertor or Water Gate, in the past also known as Inn Gate or Customs Tower, shows a fresco commemorating the bombardment of the town in the War of the Spanish Succession in 1703.

Various high-water marks bear witness to major floods. The Schlosstor or Castle Gate was the residence of the former fortress keeper of the county. Today, the town museum is located here. Old Bridge over the Inn with pillars from 1310. Castle Park with wellformer bailey.

After extensive fires, the castle was nearly fully destroyed. Park since 1895, with a 26 m deep granite well. Orangiere Baroque Garden – Georg Wieninger built a glasshouse and a home for the gardener on the old town wall in 1884; it was revitalised in 2004 and now serves as a restaurant surrounded by a beautiful park.
