A Little Bit of Italy between Drau and Isel

And yet – the begging of the mountains seems irresistible, with the hohe tauern national park and the impressive peaks of the dolomites so close. Just a few minutes and you are at the foot of the mountains that can be walked, hike, climbed and even driven up.

The feeling on one of the 3000-m peaks is overwhelming and the emotions experience on one of the safe fixed rope routes on jagged rock faces cannot be described in words. Green meadows and a cold beer in the shelter of a mountain hut – an unforgettable experience.

A lively settlement since the Bronze Age in the valley floor between the Drau and Isel rivers. Excavations of the Roman town of Aguntum (A.D. 50–450). The original settlement was expanded by the Counts of Gorizia in the 11th and 12th centuries who built, among others, Bruck Castle and the Carmelite monastery.

The Lienz Count Heinrich went down in posterity with his poems in the »Große manessische Liederhandschrift«, as did the Lienz painters Albin Egger-Lienz and Franz von Defregger. The Liebburg fortress was built in the 17th century and is the town’s landmark.

Bruck Castle, the former fortress of the counts of Gorizia, museum with gallery of famous artists, such as Albin Egger-Lienz, knights’ hall and Late Gothic chapel. Annually changing special exhibitions. Open in 2010 from 22 May to 24 October Liebburg, a representational building built by the Wolkenstein-Rodenegg family on the main square of town.

The Dominicans Convent – lovingly referred to as »Klösterle« – was founded in 1220 and is one of the oldest buildings in town. St. Andrä Parish Church with the district’s war memorial is the town’s oldest church and houses the tomb slab of Leonhard, the last of the counts of Gorizia. Originally a Romanic building, the church was rebuilt into a three-have Gothic basilica by the counts of Gorizia in the 15th century.

The Tyrol’s oldest painted wayside shrine in Kärntner Strasse next to the »Siechenhaus« hospital. Franziscan Monastery and Franziscan Church from the 15th century. Uniformly Gothic nave. Aguntum – the only Roman town in the Tyrol developed during the first and second century AD into a busy town of trade and crafts. Visitors can explore an archaeological park with the Aguntum museum and an excavation ground covering some 20,000 m2.
