Venetian Charm and Styrian Merchants

The former merchants’ settlement was an important trade centre between venice and vienna. The town preserved the Mediterranean charm from the old days of venetian traders.

Tradition and modernity form a harmonious symbiosis here and folklore finds ample space to unfold – on the farmers’ market, at folk music mornings in rustic inns or at the »Murtaler Autumn festival«.

The mix of artistic activities, festivals, markets and a relaxed pub culture make today’s centre of the district uniquely loveable and liveable.

Prehistoric finds, such as the famous Strettweg cult chariot (600 BC), bear witness to the ancient settlement and farming region. In the early 12th century, »mercatus judenpurch« developed into the oldest Styrian trading settlement.

Raised to town status in 1224, the trading settlement and the heraldic town grew together in the 13th and 14th century to form a single town enclosed by a town wall. The town’s landmark today is the four-storey 75 m high tower.

In the 14th and 15th century, Judenburg held important privileges (e.g. storage right, right to mint the Judenburg gulden, the first gold coin of Austria). Known as the »capital of Upper Styria« Judenburg enjoyed its heydays during this period.

General

The 500 year old tower with its 75.66 m is the highest, free standing bell tower in Austria. At a height of 42 m it has a gallery offering a panorama view of the entire Aichfeld region. There in lofty heights is also the most modern planetarium of Europe that can be conveniently reached with the glass panorama lift or the more sporty way via 256 steps. The Parish Church is a Baroque Vorarlberg-style pillar church with side chapels and very diverse stucco work. The »Judenburg Madonna« made from lime stone around 1420 is a treasure of art history.

The Jesuit Monastery and Jesuit Church in the centre of town were founded in 1364 and comprise a generously spaced Baroque four-winged structure and a Gothic hall church. The Puch Museum is perfect for the entire family. Milestones of automotive development can be explored here.

The Körblerhaus is a burgher house with round arch portal and a picturesque inner courtyard. St.-Magdalena Church with its frescoes and stained glass is of the highest importance in terms of artistic skills.The Judenburg Town Museum exhibits numerous collections of history and art history of the town.
