Oppidum humiste – Water is the Origin of all Things

Water is very important in this small town of fountains in upper tyrol. There are 14 fountains in the town centre offering fresh spring water ready for drinking.

And there’s more: spring water from imst tells about the town’s cultural history, invites guests to explore traditional customs and to meet the friendly inhabitants with their sunny attitude to life.

Today, imst is one of the liveliest district towns of the tyrol and knows how to combine modernity and tradition – gothic and Baroque churches and historic bourgeois town houses are as characteristic of the town as modern cafés and pubs and cultivated restaurants.

A settlement area since the Bronze Age, first mentioned in documents as »oppidum humiste« in 763, which means something like »bubbling spring«; long in Bavarian possession. In 1266, Meinhard of Tirol acquired the piece of land and awarded Imst the rights of a market town in 1282.

The town enjoyed economic heydays in the 15th and 16th centuries thanks to mining, trading and bird breeding, which went down into posterity through the »Bird Trader« by Carl Zeller.

A great crisis and the fire of 1822 only allowed Imst to regain its powers after being raised to town status in 1898. An economic upswing and the beginning of tourism mark the modern look of Imst today.

General

Mariä Himmelfahrt parish church dates back to the 15th century. The frescoes on the outside walls and its church tower are particularly remarkable; with its height of 84.5 metres, the tower is the highest in the Tyrol. In the Haus der Fasnacht you will learn more about the traditional Imst Shrovetide or carnival customs. The Museum im Ballhaus documents the history of Imst.

The Rosengartenschlucht (Rose Garden Gorge)/Blaue Grotte (Blue Grotto) is a wildly romantic gorge in the centre of town. The SOS Children’s Village is the 1st village of its kind founded in 1949 by Hermann Gmeiner. Unique sculptures of Austrian and international artists are exhibited in the Salvesen Sculpture Park.

The Alpine Coaster is the longest Alpine roller coaster in the world and guarantees unlimited fun! Starkenberg castle offers a Beer World to explore – including beer swimming pool – and reveals the secrets of the beer myth. The Gurgltal Knappenwelt tells about the life and work of medieval miners.
