Feldkirch
Jesters, Fine Wines and the Magic of History
Feldkirch owes its freedom to the warlike character of its citizens. The medieval town in the far west of Austria is a town for people who love to enjoy the pleasant sides of life.
Nestling between rolling hills, the town combines the dynamic lifestyle of modern times with the magic of history. With its 30,000 inhabitants, feldkirch is the second largest town in vorarlberg, Austria’s most westerly province.
It is also vorarlberg’s oldest town with medieval architectural character. Fascinatingly multi-faceted, that’s what this town is – with a jester festival, with vinobile Montfort – a renowned wine fair in western Austria, and with the feldkirch festival.
The first settlements were established in the Bronze Age; the German name »Feldkirch« was for the first time mentioned in an inventory of possessions of 842: »Ecclesia sancti Petri ad Campos id est Feldkircha – St. Peter bei den Feldern church, that’s Feldkirch«.
In 1218, Feldkirch was given town status, »civitas Veltkilch«. The town’s prosperity was due to the excellent geographic position in terms of transportation, to its role of economic centre and the political activities of its townspeople.
In 1376, the townspeople fought for their freedom and after the battle they last Montfort count of the Feldkirch county, Rudolf IV, granted them their freedom.
Schattenburg fortress, landmark of the town, graceful, nearly majestic, former fortification of the counts of Montfort and shrouded in legend. The Countess of Montfort is said to still haunt the fortress today! Katzenturm tower is a reminder of the former town wall. The big bell in the tower is the fourth largest bell of Austria.
St. Nikolaus Cathedral is the most important Gothic church of Vorarlberg; »Donauschule« ironwork and paintings. The Town Hall, built in 1493, was once used as a grain store; the first floor served as a cloth store. Frescoes show the history of the town. The Siechenhaus hospital with St. Magdalene church dates back to the early 14th century and is famous for its beautiful frescoes.
The Regional Academy of Music was originally the »Stella Matutina« of the Jesuits that plays an important role in Thomas Mann’s novel »The Magic Mountain«. The Museum of Targets has more than 250 exhibits. The Game Park with its nature trail is perfect for nature lovers.

Vinobile - wine fair
At the “Vinobile” from the 27th of April until the 29th of April 2012, 100 vintners from wine regions all over Austria present their wines. From Friday until Sunday, over 1000 white, red and rosé wines can be tasted at the Feldkirch Montfort House. Vintners are available at every booth to provide tasting tips and personal advice. Additionally, each year a relatively unknown wine region from outside Austria is introduced at the “Vinobile.“
knight spectacle
This market from 1st to the 3rd of June, at the foot of Schattenburg, will take you back to the time when the area was ruled by the Count of Montfort. Every year, about 20,000 visitors take this journey back through time to the middle ages. People live, eat, drink, sing and celebrate as they did 700 years ago, at booths constructed of linen, wood and straw. Merchants sell their wares. Knights fight for the honor of fair ladies while others entertain the crowds in the manner of the distant past.
Feldkirch Festival - music festival
In early summer each year, from the 6th to the 17th June 2012, Feldkirch stands in the limelight for international music. The festival is under the direction of the world famous, successful director and stage designer, Philippe Arnaud. who presents impressive liaisons of various musical époques, genres and expressions. Exciting first night performances as well as experimental projects combining music and visual arts. High class performances in the incomparable atmosphere ofthe small medieval town where artists, arts, cultures and the public come together to enjoy the unique exchange of music which stands for its diversity rather than the arbitrary.
2012: music from Norway and Finland
Wine Festival
The Feldkirch Wine Festival hosts about 20,000 „friends of the vine“ each year at the beginning of July (5th until 7th of July 2012). For over 30 years, this Folk Fest has resonated with the sounds of music groups from the Market Street. Each year, tens of thousands of glasses of wine and refreshing wine-based beverages
flow at the five „wine islands.“ Every wine island represents a different wine state of Austria. The trend of late has been toward quality, without sacrificing its cosiness. More and more wines are poured directly from the bottle, served with suitable accompaniments. If it rains, the celebration is simply moved under the arcades.
Juggling Festival
Nearly 100 street artists from all over the world meet in the old part of Feldkirch every July (27th until 28th of July 2012) to perform as in bygone days. Clowns, jugglers, mimics, and comedians compete in many languages for the favours of the audience. Every little street, street corner, and arcade hosts these multinational artists for two days. The organizers work tirelessly to ensure the quality of the entertainers: No electronic support is allowed, and the performers must move from place to place so the spectators won’t miss any of the highlights.
ArtDesign - art fair
In November each year (9th until 11th of November 2012) the international Art Fair takes place. The emphasis is on the latest designs in furniture, fashion, jewellery and innovative designs of the 20th and 21st centuries. The fair developed in its own right after being part of the Art and Antiques Fair which started in 1981 and is the first of its kind in the Lake Constance area.
„Blosengel“ Market
A week before Advent (23rd and 24th of November 2012), the inner city falls under the spell of the „Blosengel Market.“ Over 50 booths offer a variety of original gifts and goodies, such as hot spiced wine or cider, and even include „Öpfelküchle,“ an almost-forgotten Vorarlberg apple specialty in batter. Friends meet to enjoy the companionship, the food, the spiced wines and the pre-Christmas spirit of Feldkirch. Not ready for Christmas? This is the best place to get into the mood.
Christmas Market
The Feldkirch Christmas Market (30th of November until 24th of December 2012) finds its main attributes not in its size, but in its quality. On Market Street, 30 carefully selected merchants offer unique gifts and Christmas delicacies. About 100.000 visitors confirm that Feldkirch has the most beautiful Christmas Market in Vorarlberg. The quaint decorations of the booths, the selection of gifts, the decor of the streets and the offerings of seasonal foods account for only a fraction of this Market’s success: A daily program of local choirs and artists combines with many attractions for children to lure guests from the whole Bodensee area to the Feldkirch Christmas Market
Advent Singing
On the first three Saturdays of Advent, traditional singing may be heard in the provincial Conservatory. The object of these contemplative evenings is to offer the locals and others a bit of authentic culture through the talents of local artists. Putting all commercial interests aside, these concerts put everyone into a wonderful frame of mind through specially arranged, romantic Christmas programmes.
