Enns is a historic site. The area around Enns has been inhabited for 4000 years. Around 200, the Romans set up a legion camp and established and urban settlement, both named Lauriacum.
Under the reign of the Babenbergs, Enns grew in significance and in 1212 received its town charter from Duke Leopold VI. This deed – of which the original is still available – is the oldest town charter of Austria.
With its unique town tower, the landmark of Enns, the Renaissance and Baroque house fronts and the well preserved town fortification, Enns offers medieval flair in a modern town.
The Town Tower built between 1564 and 1568, some 60 m high, is the landmark of the »town of turrets« and offers a wonderful view of the foothills of the Alps. St. Laurenz Basilica harmonises in a very special way with modern city life. Its oldest part, the tower, dates back to the 9th/10th century and Roman materials were used to build it. Today’s church was built end the end of the 13th century.
St. Marien parish church with the Wallseer chapel (1343) is one of the oldest mendicant order churches (1276) in Austria. The idiosyncratic architecture of Austrian High Gothic art and the magnificent windows by famous artist Martin Prachensky are well worth a visit. The Lauriacum museum displays Roman ex displays exhibits of international importance and the only Roman ceiling fresco still preserved in Austria.
The fresco shows Amor and Psyche. Prehistory and ethnology collections. Ennsegg Castle with its wedding chapel is popular for weddings with its ambience of a fortress that was built in 1570. Dukes and counts were once married here. The Georgenberger Hall, Auersperg Hall, Napoleon Hall or the wide arcade yard are venues for celebrations, concerts and exhibitions.
